Update Regarding 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Tragedy Site

31 Oct, 2022

Statement from
The City of Humboldt and the Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee on
2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Tragedy Site

Humboldt, SK – The Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee has been working diligently in cooperation with the Ministry of Highways and SaskPower to determine the appropriate solution(s) at the site of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos tragedy to create a permanent memorial to honor those involved. The tragedy occurred approximately 170km northeast of Humboldt at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 near Tisdale on April 6, 2018.

The committee is comprised of representatives of the 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos Families, Humboldt Broncos Board members, Humboldt Public Art committee, and City Council.

“There have been several hurdles in proceeding with any cleanup and planning for a permanent memorial due to the need to relocate power lines and deciding where to construct a new access road so that visitors can safely park while they pay their respects. There appears to be some positive discussions for the development of the site, and we hope to make an announcement about a memorial at the site on or near the upcoming 5th anniversary [April 6, 2023],” said Carol Brons, a member of the Memorials Committee and mother to Dayna Brons who lost her life in the tragedy.

A number of safety enhancements have been completed by the Department of Highways, and SaskPower is in the process of finalizing their plan to relocate power lines away from the site.

In preparation for site development to occur in the spring of 2023, representatives of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Families, along with some Humboldt community members, attended the site on Saturday, October 29 to collect and archive many of the items that had been placed at the site. The committee is eager for the planning to move forward once the final decisions are made regarding access points and power lines.

The Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee would like to thank everyone for their patience.
